Housing

Mel is the only candidate in this race with a record of taking on big developers and winning tangible victories, including hundreds of units of permanently-affordable housing. Mel owes nothing to real estate developers, refuses their donations to his campaign, and has even returned checks from developers who tried to donate.

The Upper West Side becomes less affordable each day. Friends and neighbors who have lived here for decades are losing their homes. Homelessness is rampant. This is unacceptable. Real estate greed should not set policy for the people of New York. Mel is a fiercely independent community activist who will stand up to big real estate and help us reclaim our neighborhood.

What Mel Will Do About It

  1. Keep folks in their homes and off of the streets. Preserve subsidized, stabilized, and supportive housing.

  2. Expand affordable housing options including small-scale apartments and “boarding flats.”

  3. Expand access to SCRIE and DRIE.

  4. Tax empty apartments.

  5. Crack down on abusive and law-breaking landlords. Rate building managers like we do restaurants.

  6. Ensure a right to legal assistance for tenants.

  7. Organize New Yorkers to reclaimhome rule” of housing from state government.

What Mel Has Already Done

  1. Successfully pressed developers to construct 600 units of permanent affordable housing at Riverside Center.

  2. Organized SRO tenants to drive out a predatory landlord and preserve their affordable units.

  3. Stood up to big real estate interests who drive out affordable housing.

  4. Initiated a community database to track and protect subsidized housing on the Upper West Side.
